The resident district commissioner (RDC) of Amuria, Paul Eseru, has rallied student patriots to join his office in the fight against crime and in efforts to inculcate good morals in the communities they live.

More than 2,600 students in the district were passed out as patriots on Monday.

The students were drawn from 21 secondary schools and four vocational training institutions.

During the passing out of the young patriots, RDC Eseru emphasised their importance as ambassadors for positive change in their communities.

He said they are now essential partners in the ongoing fight against crime, and in the promotion of peace, unity, discipline, and strong moral values.

His message was particularly poignant following the recent apprehension of over 50 youth involved in illicit activities such as marijuana use.

“I urge you all to guide those who are participating in such harmful behaviors to reconsider their choices. You are now my partners in this mission; my force multipliers,” Eseru rallied the patriots, also encouraging them to prioritize community service over personal interest.

He is confident they have absorbed all the training's lessons and values and will embody his vision for a community rooted in peace and responsibility.

Eseru encouraged the young patriots to draw inspiration from exemplary leaders and strive for discipline, unity, and accountability.

He highlighted the importance of integrity, especially in avoiding any involvement in exam malpractice, stating that true patriots must set a positive example for others to follow.

“You are now representatives of the RDC in your schools. You are an integral part of this mission."

James Aminu, the patriotism coordinator for Amuria district, shared that the week-long, intensive training, themed "Patriotism for Mindset Change" aimed to equip participants with knowledge and skills essential for fostering good morals and strong community values.

The programme emphasized the importance of hard work and cultivating leadership qualities to positively shape the future of the nation.

SP Peter Oyesigye, the district police commander of Amuria, underscored the need to adhere to the four core ideological pillars of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Uganda: patriotism, pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy.

He highlighted that without a proper understanding and application of these principles, the aspirations embodied in the training would remain unfulfilled.

“You cannot build a strong nation without discipline. The youth should make sure they push their country ahead of us,” said Oyesigye.

Peter Ocaga, the chairperson of the Secondary Schools Headteachers Association in Amuria and headteacher of Orungo High School, voiced his disappointment over the low student turnout for mandatory patriotism training, vowing to investigate the reasons behind the lack of participation from schools.

Mariam Atubo, a student of Amuria Secondary School, said she believes mutual love is essential for Uganda's progress, and emphasized the importance of patriotism training.

She urged her peers not to underestimate its benefits for the nation's development and peace.

“This is not punishment but for the love of our country Uganda,” she said.

The ceremonies were hosted by Amuria Secondary School, Wera Secondary School, and Starlight Secondary School.
