Vision Group launches Bukedde Pass PLE clubs in schools

Vision Group has launched the Bukedde Pass PLE pullout to enhance academic excellence among learners and schools across the country.

Through this programme, learning materials such as trial questions and answers for Primary Six and Primary Seven pupils will be published in Bukedde newspaper.

In addition to providing learning materials, Vision Group will, through subscriptions, register schools into Pass PLE clubs.

Under this arrangement, teams of experienced teachers will visit schools to guide learners through complex lessons and help them understand how to tackle challenging questions.

"Through the clubs, learners are trained to work in groups and make presentations to the entire class," said Don Wanyama, the Vision Group CEO.

The pullout, according to Wanyama, will feature contributions from some of the best teachers in Kampala and other parts of the country. The content will be prepared following guidance from the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).

"Because these teachers are from the best schools, in essence, we bring schools like Kabojja, Buddo, Gayaza, and Savio to areas such as Kalisizo, Iganga, Mubende, Mbale, and Busia," he explained.

Wanyama noted that since the project involves both teaching and answering questions, it will benefit not only pupils but also teachers, especially in less privileged areas.

He made these remarks during the official launch of the Bukedde Pass PLE pullout at Vision Group's head office in Kampala on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

According to the plan, the project will run until the final days of the national exams to ensure learners gain the necessary knowledge and confidence to succeed.

The pullout will cover four main subjects—Mathematics, Social Studies, English, and Integrated Science—and will be published every Monday and Thursday.

Questions published on Mondays will have their answers featured on Thursdays, and vice versa.

Unlike previous editions, the new Bukedde Pass PLE pullout will have spaces where learners can write their answers, allowing both pupils and teachers to track performance effectively.

As part of the programme, Vision Group will also organise an academic quiz where experienced teachers will provide final exam tips to learners.

"I would like to inform you that in this arrangement with our dear sponsors, we organise a quiz where experienced teachers give final tips about exams. We intend to make it better every passing year," Wanyama said.

He added, "I am happy to inform you that we have testimonies that have made us understand, without doubt, that Bukedde newspaper is one of the best schools in the country."

Call to action for teachers and parents

Miriam Nambatya, the Pass PLE Pullout coordinator, urged teachers and learners to utilise Bukedde newspaper, explaining that the learning materials are designed by experienced teachers who provide proper guidance for final exams.

"I implore teachers to make good use of these learning materials to help boost their preparation of learners ahead of final exams," Nambatya said.

Willy Kataswa, a teacher at Green Hill Academy, praised Vision Group for its contribution to the education sector, adding that such initiatives should be expanded to benefit more learners.

He noted that Uganda’s shift towards competence-based learning requires enhanced research, something the Bukedde Pass PLE pullout is actively supporting.

"It is not just about learners or teachers alone, but also parents who should buy Bukedde newspaper to aid learning. We are grateful to Vision Group for the support," Kataswa said.

Peter Ssemanda, a teacher at Mugwanya Preparatory School, Kabojja, described the initiative as timely in helping learners prepare for their final national exams.

How Pass PLE clubs will work

Michael Ssebbowa, the Bukedde editor, explained that Pass PLE clubs will be formed in schools across the country based on subscriptions.

He emphasised that the clubs would help learners acquire essential skills such as teamwork and public speaking.

"Learners shall not only be helped to prepare for their final exams but also get acquainted with skills such as public speaking and teamwork," Ssebbowa said.
