On a sweltering Tuesday morning at Busitema University’s main campus in Uganda's eastern district of Busia, students were busy attending lectures inside lecture rooms while others sat under the shade outside in discussion meetings. But August 18 was more than just another day on the academic calendar.

The university was the first stopover for the orientation activities of this year's edition of the Ultimate University Quiz, an annual competition organised by multimedia company Vision Group that tests the knowledge and academic abilities of participating students in a series of quiz faceoffs.

Now in its fourth season, the competition has Bank of Uganda as the platinum sponsor, along with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and Turkish Airlines.

Tuesday's orientation at Busitema University coincided with the arrival of fresh students beginning their university journey, with university officials and partners encouraging them to take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom.

David Owino, the assistant guild administrator, urged the freshers to embrace the Ultimate University Quiz, describing it as an opportunity that could open doors for their future.

“You have come to the right university with many opportunities. The Ultimate University Quiz presents opportunities that will brighten your future even before you complete your course," Owino (pictured above) told the first-year students.

He shared his experience from the previous edition, including an opportunity to meet Bank of Uganda Governor Dr Michael Atingi-Ego.

Busitema University finished third last season in a competition that attracted 18 chartered universities across Uganda. This year, 20 universities will be battling for top honours.

Max Adii (pictured below), the project leader, commended the leadership of Busitema University, for embracing the competition and praised the students for their commitment during the auditions.

Adii said the quiz, which has grown into a high-quality academic competition, had also attracted additional support, including sponsorship from Turkish Airlines.

Jonah Waiswa (pictured below), the head of stakeholder engagement at the Bank of Uganda, encouraged students to participate actively in the competition.

“When we don’t come and enlighten you here, then we shall not have people who will succeed us. We are interested in young people, and that is why we are supporting this kind of initiative,” he told the Busitema students.

Waiswa also said that strong academic performance and participation in initiatives like the Ultimate University Quiz could open them up to opportunities, including internships.

Collin Agaba (pictured below), the UCC eastern region manager, reminded the students that university life goes beyond reading books and attending lectures.

Godwin Akiza (pictured below), an officer in charge of tax education at URA, took the students through tax education and encouraged them to embrace the quiz as a platform for learning and personal development.

Busitema University guild president Onesmus Kamara said the competition would help students sharpen their knowledge and build their confidence, assuring the university's participating team of support in the resources they need to prepare for this year's quiz.

“Last time we missed the first position, but we are determined this time to bring the trophy home,” said Kamara (pictured below).

Uganda Christian University (UCU) emerged as the overall winner of Season Three of the Ultimate University Quiz, with Ndejje University finishing as runner-up and Busitema in third.

Alex Debongo (pictured below) was part of the Busitema team that lifted the university to third place last year. He said he is confident this year's representatives of Busitema will do even better.

The quiz orientation journey continues.
