Three pregnant girls aged 14 and 15 are among candidates who sat this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in Namayingo district despite being due to deliver.
According to Paul Ouma Magaafa, the headteacher at Syanyonja Primary School in Namayingo, the girls were expecting to deliver their babies on November 2 and 6, 2026.
This was revealed during the PLE monitoring exercise conducted by the Namayingo Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Sarah Mwebaza Kasadha, who visited several examination centres in the area on Tuesday (November 3). PLE exams started on Tuesday and ended today (November 4).
Kasadha counselled the expectant candidates, urging them not to lose hope or abandon their education because of teenage pregnancies and encouraged them to remain calm and concentrate on their studies.
She informed the school administration that arrangements had been made to ensure the expectant girls receive immediate medical attention in case they underwent labour while sitting their papers.
Our medical team was ready to help the girls in case they experienced labour,” Kasadha said.
Meanwhile, the examination exercise was marked by two distressing incidents involving candidates.
At Jamie Primary School in Nsango within Buyinja sub-county, one male candidate was absent after being admitted into the Intensive Care Unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
At Dohwe Primary School, another candidate was reported to have drowned in Lake Victoria while he had gone fishing.
This year’s PLE has seen 920,833 registered candidates, representing a 12.5% increase from the 817,885 candidates who registered for PLE examinations in 2025. The candidates are sitting their papers at 16,478 examination centres across the country.
