Soroti district is facing a significant shortage of primary school teachers, with education officials saying at least 200 additional teachers are needed to match the growing number of learners in public schools.
Acting district education officer John Michael Okiror says overcrowding in several schools has become a major challenge, with some institutions operating with very limited teaching staff despite high pupil enrolment.
He cited schools such as Obiarai and Ojago Primary Schools, where learner numbers have increased but staffing levels have remained low, affecting effective teaching and learning.
Okiror says the district has formally written to the Ministry of Education and Sports requesting urgent deployment of additional teachers to address the gap.
He notes that the staffing shortage is affecting lesson delivery and increasing the workload for the few available teachers, a situation he said could impact learner performance if not addressed.
Meanwhile, Ojago Primary School head teacher Moses Oolio says the staffing situation at his school is critical, with only eight teachers handling a population of about 800 learners.
He further reveals that some teachers who were transferred to the school have not reported for duty, worsening the staffing gap.
Education authorities say they are awaiting a response from the Ministry of Education as pressure mounts to address the teacher shortage across the district.
