'Somewhere, a child will discover a talent because a teacher noticed it'

“Somewhere in Uganda, a child will discover a talent because a teacher noticed it; another will imagine a future previously thought impossible because a teacher helped him recognise his potential. That is both the privilege and responsibility of being a teacher,” said Mugenyi.

Graduates have been rallied to continue learning even after stepping away from the lecture rooms.

“Remember that your education will ultimately be measured by the difference you make in the lives of others," Stella Rose Akongo, the principal of Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education, told a fresh cohort graduating with qualifications in early childhood care and primary education.

This was on Thursday during the 7th graduation ceremony in Luzira, Kampala.

42 of the 115-strong group graduated with a diploma in education, 26 with certificates in early childhood care and education, 17 with a diploma in early childhood care and education and 12 with a bachelor of pre-primary education.

"Continue learning, recognise the dignity of every learner and teach for life rather than for examinations alone,” said Akongo.

She said the success of the competence-based curriculum depends on teachers who move beyond content delivery to nurturing learners who think critically, solve problems and apply real-life learning situations.

The principal also reiterated the institution’s commitment towards strengthening teacher education, continuous professional development, research and partnerships.

The graduation was held under the theme “Skilled to Deliver: Teachers for a Competence-Based Generation.”

Cleophus Mugenyi, the Commissioner for Basic Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, who was the chief guest, implored the fresh graduates to understand their learners, keep learning and make competence visible.

“Somewhere in Uganda, a child will discover a talent because a teacher noticed it; another will imagine a future previously thought impossible because a teacher helped him recognise his potential. That is both the privilege and responsibility of being a teacher,” he said.

Mugenyi encouraged the graduates to embrace the competence-based curriculum and impart it to their learners.
