The selection exercise for individuals interested in pursuing careers in technical vocational and education training (TVET) institutions will be conducted next month.

The exercise will take place at regional centres from February 3 until February 7.

The education ministry announced this in this week's New Vision print edition of Wednesday.

The regional centres are:

▪️ Gombe Community Polytechnic for Central

▪️ Mbale Community Polytechnic in Mbale City for Eastern

▪️ Bobi Community Polytechnic for Northern

▪️ Kakiika Technical School in Mbarara city for Western

The application forms will be obtained from any of the regional selection centres.

They can also be picked from the city/municipal/district education offices, TVET institutions across the country, education ministry headquarters and web portals (tvet.go.ug and www.education.go.ug).

The deadline for application submission is January 31.

Successful applicants have an opportunity to pursue careers from a range of programmes offered at various Uganda Community Polytechnic Certificate (UCPC) institutions on both private and government sponsorship.

The programmes have a duration period of three years, leading to the award of the UCPC.

The education ministry officially released the results of the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) on Thursday.

What to expect

According to Narasi Anyijuka Kambaho, the principal public relations officer for the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB), candidates will do a competency interview.

"Any candidate who was assessed by UNEB and was able to score from Division 1 to 4 is eligible for selection, " he said.

Candidates who did not score within the above grade range have a chance to take informal courses available at DIT-accredited centres across the country, he added.

These provide a chance to gain skills although they don't provide a chance for upward career growth through the tertiary and university like UBTEB-assessed qualifications.

Since 2019, the government has been prioritizing technical and vocational development in Uganda with a focus on developing science and technology, which are critical for national development as enshrined in the National Development Plan III and IV.

The government believes promoting vocational education is the way to go in light of the country's high unemployment.

Despite the high number of degrees being churned out by universities every year, not many of the over 700,000 graduates that are coming out of the university system have employable skills, according to the National Planning Authority.
