The Rotary Club of Akright City has rehabilitated the dilapidated St Padre Pio Kabulamiliro Primary School in Bwebajja, Wakiso district, at a tune of sh52m.
Accompanied by several Rotarians, the governor of Rotary District 9214 (Uganda and Tanzania), Daniel Mukasa Ddamulira, visited the school on Sunday (September 27) to inspect the completed rehabilitation works.
Ddamulira hailed the Rotary Club of Akright City for their intervention in rehabilitating the oldest school building, cementing the classroom blocks and equipping the headteachers' office, saying this would improve the learning environment for pupils.
“I believe the standards of the school will improve with time; thank you for taking action,” Ddamulira said.
He explained that it was because of the projects that the Rotary Club of Akright City has conducted that he was attracted to visit the school.
“The project of rehabilitating one of the oldest buildings of the school, making it suitable and convenient for all learners, will go a long way in serving the vulnerable community,” Ddamulira stated.

The president of the Rotary Club of Akright City, Ann Kawooya Nsubuga, said the club’s intervention was driven by the mission of supporting vulnerable communities.
She said the club’s management assessed the needs of St Padre Pio Primary School and embarked on renovating the school to ensure that learners have a good learning environment.
The Akright City community leader, Stephen Baganda, commended the Rotarians for coming to the rescue of St Padre Pio Primary School, saying there was great concern as many pupils were facing hardships.
According to the headteacher of St Padre Pio Kabulamiliro, Claire Khainza, the school administration has been grappling with classroom dust, washed wall paint, blown off roof, causing learners to suffer from flu, sunshine, and rain, and some have since dropped out of school.
Khainza commended the intervention of the Rotary Club of Akright City to renovate the oldest building in the school. “We are extremely happy for the Rotary Club of Akright City for coming to our rescue because whenever it would rain, the learners would have to run away for shelter in other classrooms after the wind blew off the roof,” Khainza said.
According to Khainza, the church-founded government-aided primary school has a total population of 472 learners: 223 boys and 249 girls.
The headteacher appealed for more support to construct a school kitchen, as well as provide scholastic materials and supply uniforms for pupils whose parents cannot afford them.
During the visit, governor Ddamulira and Nsubuga planted trees.
