Police impound 18 buses transporting learners at Njeru checkpoint

“The buses were escorted to a safe parking area where they remained until morning. They will be escorted by police to their respective destinations. Schools already on trips are reminded not to travel at night. Instead, they should report to the nearest Police station for guidance and where necessary, a Police escort. All return journeys must be undertaken between 6:00am and 6:00pm,” Kananura warned.

BUIKWE - Police on Friday, July 17, 2026, intercepted 18 school buses transporting children from academic trips and tours at the Njeru checkpoint in Buikwe district.

Michael Kananura, the Traffic and Safety Directorate spokesperson, said the buses were intercepted in line with the Ministry of Education and Sports directive suspending school trips and prohibiting night travel for schools already on trips.

“The buses were escorted to a safe parking area where they remained until morning. They will be escorted by police to their respective destinations. The Ministry of Education and Sports on Friday, July 17, 2026, announced they will be constituting an inter-ministerial taskforce to develop comprehensive regulations to ensure safety of learners during study tours and trips.

The acting Minister of Education and Sports, Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo, announced the new raft of measures that government has taken following  Thursday’s tragic road crash involving pupils of King David Junior School at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road, where over 20 children died.

The minister also announced the indefinite suspension of all study trips and tours.
