KYAMBOGO | GRADUATION | STARTED

It was a day of splendor, joy, and glory in the precincts of Kyambogo hill, as the first of three days of Kyambogo University's 18th graduation got underway on Wednesday.

A total of 12,080 students are graduating with certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and PhDs in different disciplines. These include 6,239 males and 5,841 females.

An aura of achievement was not only evident in youths clad in graduation gowns and the parents that accompanied them, but also in the buzz of activity that engulfed the main campus.

The graduation ceremony, which runs until Friday, was presided over by the Chancellor, Prof. John Yakobo Okedi.

The chief guest, education minister, and First Lady Janet Museveni were represented by John Chrysostom Muyingo, the higher education state minister.

'Transformational knowledge'

Speaking on the opening day of the event, Muyingo advised the university management to use the opportunity afforded by the digital revolution to create global partnerships in education.

He said Kyambogo should prioritize research and encourage students to seek to discover solutions to challenges that affect society.

"University education is not only about knowledge accumulation, but also transformational knowledge that can be used to transform the wellbeing of the individual and community," said Muyingo.

The university's vice chancellor, Prof. Elly Katunguka, said Kyambogo is investing in infrastructure to leverage technology advancement to improve teaching and learning.

He said the university is also exploring other forms of resource mobilization, such as partnerships and alumni, to complement funding from the government.

Katunguka said this is the highest number of students the university has graduated in one ceremony since its inception.

'Remain humble'

In an atmosphere of celebration, joyful graduands screamed as their names were read for conferment of their degrees.

Zaituni Nakaddu of Bachelor's of Business Administration emerged as the best female student with a CGPA of 4.83. She received different awards.

David Ssemwanga, who will be in the second graduating cohort on Thursday, was named the best male student.

The chairperson of the University council, Dr. Gorretti Nakabugo, advised the freshmen graduates to have a positive attitude toward work to succeed in their respective fields.

"Remain humble. Continue to learn, not just academics, but life-long learning," she said.

"You also need integrity because the world is individual with this attribute. It is the best gift you can offer to humanity."
