A total of 2,583 candidates have today, February 23, 2024 graduated with vocational skills (diplomas and certificates) at the 26th YMCA Comprehensive Institute (YCI) graduation at its Buwambo campus, in Wakiso district.

Out of the total number of graduates, 51% are female. The numbers, according to YCI chancellor Dr James Nkata, have improved from last years 1,890.

According to Nkata, the improvement is due to the shifting mindset by parents towards vocational courses.

"We are glad to see more people graduate in skill-based courses, because it is the way to go. It is not always common especially in the third world country where people and governments tend to pride in theoretically-based awards," Nkata said.

The graduates undertook courses, including catering, cosmetology, business, secretarial studies, computer science, fashion and design and electrical engineering.

University charter granted

Nkata announced that the institution had been awarded a charter, which he said would mean new status and service delivery. He noted that the charter validates the fact that YMCA is walking the right path in transforming lives.

"We thank President Yoweri Museveni for approving and granting us charter status. It is here that we shall stand tall to still transform lives," Nkata said.

YCI principal Dr Herbert Mukas asked the graduates on hard work and resilience, arguing that it was not over until they (graduates) make it in life. He noted that the only way one can make their families proud is by accumulating wealth and community development as opposed to mere archiving of degrees and diplomas.

"Your true journey starts today! Go out and work harder again to be successful," Mukasa said.

Speaking at the same event, Roselyne Birungi, the chairperson of the YCI governing council, called upon the graduates to make the institution proud by contributing towards the development of the country. She also implored them to serve and love their country with honestly and responsibility.

"Be disciplined and contribute to your country with honesty and responsibility. Go and represent us well in the field of work," Birungi said.
