KAMPALA - The headteacher of Nakazigo Primary School in Uganda's eastern district of Mayuge has been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison for allegedly stealing sh176 million meant for the construction of classroom blocks.

Ramadhan Ngobi, 58, was on March 18, 2025, charged with embezzlement and abuse of office before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.

Principal Grade One Magistrate Christopher Opit presided over this session.
Under the Anti-Corruption Act, the offence of embezzlement attracts a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison while abuse of office elicits a seven-year jail term.

Inspectorate of Government prosecutors Mikka Luteete and William Ntumwa informed the court that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

Allegations

Prosecution alleges that Ngobi between February 2021 and October 2021, while working as headteacher of Nakazigo Primary School, in the performance of his duties stole sh176 million, the property of his employer which he had access to by virtue of his office.

It is also purported that that same year, Ngobi abused the authority of his office by withdrawing sh176 million from the school’s bank account No.9030006458938 domiciled in Stanbic Bank.

According to the prosecution, the money was meant for construction of two classroom blocks and a five stance VIP latrine at the school.

Ngozi is accused of not implementing those activities and instead put the funds to personal use.

Prosecution alleges that he committed an arbitrary act which is prejudicial to the interests of his employer [school].

The magistrate adjourned the case until next Tuesday (March 25) when Ngobi is expected to apply for bail.
