Hosts Uganda Christian University (UCU) were given a rude welcome to the 19th edition of the National University Games in football after losing 2-0 against Makerere University in Mukono.

Sam Omara put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute with a tap-in, in the first half before Ivan Ocheng fired home from a distance in the second half.

Douglas Bamweyana's side delivered a perfect performance and no doubt they deserved to be where they are due to UCU's poor marking who lacked tools to break their opponent's defence.

To cook matters, UCU charged upfront but striker Isaac Ofoyrwoth's header went over the bar at the stroke of the second half.

This also shows that Makerere continued with their University Football League (UFL) dominance in these games the fact that they finished all the group matches unbeaten.

UCU  came into the encounter as defending champions after beating Islamic University in Uganda 2-0 during a fascinating final at the 18th edition of the games that were hosted by the University of Kisubi (UNIK) in Entebbe in 2019.

The defending champions also had the home advantage to capitalise on as well as the home crowd meaning that the biggest percentage of the noise was in their favor.

UCU head coach Jimmy Kintu will have his boys to blame for allowing the visitors to dominate and grab important points from them at their home ground.

Having secured an opening victory against the defending champion makes Makerere a threat of the 19th edition of the National University Games moving forward.

UCU head coach Kintu said his side failed to capitalise on a few chances they got which their opponents did.

"When you get chances and you don't use them that is what happens, our opponents fully used their chances and here we are. Of course we missed the services of our captain Godfrey Gagganga who was not feeling nice but what I know is we shall bounce back strong," said Kintu.
