KAMPALA - Makerere University, Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning, has been ranked 16th on the continent in the new issue of university rankings released Wednesday by Webometrics also known as the Ranking Web.

The new rankings place Makerere one position above Kenya’s University of Nairobi, thus making them the only universities from the East African bloc appearing in the top 50 on the African continent.

On the global level, Makerere University and University of Nairobi stand in 1043rd and 1045 respectively.

Makerere’s position in this release marks a significant improvement as compared to the previous rankings, where the institution was placed 19th on the continent and 1088th on the global level. This improvement has been attributed to the impact of research activities on addressing community challenges.

In the same rankings, the privately owned and Ugandan-based institution, Kampala International University takes the second position in Uganda, 56th in Africa and 2137th in the world.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kyambogo University and Gulu University follow in 3rd, 4th and 5th positions respectively at the national level.

Inclined on the pillars of impact, openness and excellence of universities worldwide, Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions offering every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world.
