The Kyankwanzi district resident district commissioner (RDC), Sharon Ankunda, has cautioned parents to ensure that all school-going children return to school and attend classes regularly as the second term progresses.
Speaking during an interview at her office in Rwebisiriza, Butemba town council, Kyankwanzi district, Ankunda expressed concern over the increasing number of pupils and teachers who have not reported back to school despite the second term commencing on May 25, 2026.
“I have visited several schools and found that some teachers were absent while a number of children had not yet reported back. Parents and teachers must play their respective roles to ensure learners receive quality education,” Ankunda said.
She urged learners to remain focused on their studies and avoid distractions that could affect their academic performance.
“Education is the key to a better future. I encourage all children to concentrate on their studies and make the most of the opportunity provided to them,” she added.
The RDC further appealed to parents to fulfil their responsibilities and ensure that domestic disputes do not interfere with their children's education.
“Misunderstandings between parents should never affect a child’s education. Every child has a right to learn regardless of the challenges their parents may be facing,” Ankunda emphasised.
She particularly called upon fathers to take an active role in supporting their children.
“Fathers must play their role of providing for their children because the government wants to see every child in school,” she said.
Ankunda also warned head teachers and teachers in government-aided schools against sending pupils home over school fees and registration charges, noting that government schools were established to provide affordable education to disadvantaged families.
“Government schools are free of charge and were established to help poor families. School administrators should follow the official guidelines on candidate registration instead of disturbing learners with unnecessary charges,” she warned.
Meanwhile, the RDC called on the public to remain vigilant against Ebola and observe all health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during public gatherings, including Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, church services, mosque prayers and other community events.
“People should continue using sanitisers, washing their hands regularly and observing all recommended SOPs to prevent the spread of Ebola,” she advised.
She also urged residents to promptly report anyone exhibiting signs and symptoms associated with Ebola to health authorities.
“We must work together to stop the spread of Ebola. The public should immediately report suspected cases so that appropriate action can be taken,” Ankunda said.
