Kisubi-Mapeera SS wins Buganda Kingdom MDD competition

This school competition plays a crucial role in strengthening all levels of MDD in the Buganda region, creating a chain link between schools and age groups.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has crowned Kisubi-Mapeera SS as champions of this year’s Buganda Kingdom Music Dance and Drama competition.

The competition under the theme; “tutaase okukozesa ebiragalalagala” (to avoid drug abuse) through poems, songs, and Drama was going on in all schools in the Buganda region.

Students competed in items including Drama, Creative dance, instrumental, speech, folksong, poem, and folk dance among others.

The Headteacher in charge of Education and Sports in Busiro, Joseph Ddamulira said they would work hard to ensure that they retain the trophy in the next competition.

Katikiro Mayiga was awarded the best performance school (Kisubi-Mapeera) on Friday. While addressing participants Mayiga blamed drug abuse in the youth as the key problem behind the increased bad behavior.

Mayiga noted that many youths who smoke cocaine and other drugs, lose their senses and go on to indulge in irresponsible and risky other behaviors that often make them helpless including sexuality.

He decried the increased alcohol consumption and drug abuse has worsened, domestic violence, illness, poverty in youth groups, and killings in the youth.

He said that “it is regrettable that Ugandans especially youths have failed to learn from avoiding alcohol consumption, but they continue with the vice.”

Mayiga said that “I am deeply honored today to award Students of Kisubi-Mapeera, this year’s best in the Buganda Schools competition with a strong focus on fighting drug abuse as this year’s theme was aimed. Participants must be of the right age and genuine students, as this will contribute to the overall development of the fight to avoid it in our nation,”

He added that the Buganda Schools competitions not only serve as a platform for showcasing the exceptional MDD talent of young, but also as a catalyst for character development, talents. Through these competitions, participants will have the opportunity to display their talents and skills and compete in schools.

The function was graced by school founder, Fr Vincent Mulumba, chancellor of Kampala Archdiocese and chairman of the board, Fr Dr Pius Male Ssentumbwe, chief of Busiro county, Charles Kintu Sserinnya, in charge of education and sports in Busiro Joseph Ddamulira, Buganda Minister, Bwanika who represented Minister Nakindu, parents and several officials from the Buganda Kingdom.

Other schools that received cheques and other gifts were Our Lady of Africa Namilyango, Makindye Junior School, and Kawaala Primary School, which won in another category.

According to organiser from Buganda Kingdom, Dorothy Zawedde, the competition was part of the drug abuse awareness campaign for school students. “with this mindset, Kisubi-Mapeera won in secondary and followed by other schools including primary schools in another category.

 

“The Music, Dance, and Drama competitions are organized annually by Buganda Kingdom with different themes, this year was to fight drug abuse from the teenagers. They form part of the co-curricular activities to complement classroom teaching.

Zawedde revealed that “Buganda school competitions play a crucial role in strengthening all levels of sports in Uganda, creating a chain link from schools to leagues and age groups.”

She added that “We expressed our gratitude to all the schools, parents, officials, and school directors who played a pivotal role in making the Buganda Schools competitions a reality. Their unwavering support and dedication are invaluable in creating an exceptional experience for the participating students.”

This school competition plays a crucial role in strengthening all levels of MDD in the Buganda region, creating a chain link between schools and age groups.

She said that Buganda School’s competitions started in 2009 to promote children’s talents, give them hope, and also to meet with other children from different schools.

“The competitions were in different categories: dance, drama, public speaking, I take this opportunity to thank the schools who participated and also we call other schools to participate,” she said.
