Kansanga school in desperate need of more classrooms
The school administrators say this not only limits effective teaching and learning, but also reduces learner participation. To enable pupils study in a conducive environment, the school is seeking financial support to construct more classrooms.

Kansanga Primary School in Kampala's Makindye division is grappling with a shortage of classroom space. The existing classrooms accommodate more than 100 learners each, resulting in overcrowding.
The school administrators say this not only limits effective teaching and learning, but also reduces learner participation.
To enable pupils to study in a conducive environment, the school is seeking financial support to construct more classrooms.
“This school has a population of over 1,000 pupils yet we have only 13 classrooms. Since learners are crowded and each class accommodates around 120 to 150 pupils, it is hard for them to concentrate,” said headteacher Jalia Nakayiza.
Some classrooms' roofs leak when it rains, which means the occupants do not study on rainy days.
"Instead of children continuing with learning, they stand in corners of the classrooms until the rain stops," said Nakayiza.
She revealed the concerns during the commissioning of the school library held on Friday (August 7).

The ceremony was organised by Rotary clubs of Konge Lukuli, Muyenga, Kampala Muyenga Breeze and Muyenga Tankhill, in partnership with 21 Rotary and 15 Rotaract clubs.

This was part of the Ten days of Double Impact programme themed 'Education and Literacy'.
“On behalf of the school administration, I appreciate all Rotarians for your generosity because we prayed for this miracle. The library is more than just a renovated room; it is an investment in the future of our learners," said the headteacher.

Rotary Club of Muyenga president Beatrice Lugalambi said the school was chosen because Rotarians wanted to create a difference in the lives of the children.
Kansanga Primary School is one of the largest public primary school in the area, serving more than 2,500 pupils from communities along Ggaba road throughout Makindye division.
“A significant number of these children come from under-privileged families. Many are raised by single parents while others come from households facing unemployment and financial hardships, with some families struggling even to provide a single meal a day," said Lugalambi.
When the Rotary Club of Muyenga Tank Hill conducted a needs assessment at the school, the library emerged as the highest priority for the school.
According to Lugalambi, the challenges were overwhelming because the library had no desks, forcing pupils to sit on the floor while reading. The roof was badly damaged and whenever it rained, water leaked onto the books, putting valuable learning materials at risk.
The wooden bookshelves had been destroyed by termites and years of water damage. The conditions of the books themselves reflected years of neglect.
That called for the creation of a safe learning environment for learners and also protection of their books.
“The Rotary Club of Muyenga Tank Hill first reroofed the library block of the three classrooms. We then came in to complete the library revamp by providing reading books, and with support from Gustro Limited, VSO, the library is equipped with over 700 books," said Lugalambi.
Past District Governor Ken Mugisha commended all the 36 presidents of both Rotary and Rotaract clubs for the intervention.
“It is very unfortunate that a school like this with 13 classrooms accommodates over 2,000 students," he said.
"Looking at an area of focus which is basic education and literacy, let us go back to our clubs and rethink our strategy of implementing programmes in communities around and amidst us."
