Gulu University now boasts a total of 23 Associate Professors after elevating nine senior lecturers from the level of Doctors (Dr) to Associate Professors in a new university reshuffle aimed at promoting vibrancy in teaching, academics and research.

James Onono Ojok, the Gulu University communication officer and public relations officer, confirmed the elevation of the nine on June 18, 2026.

Onono said the elevation was done on merit through the university’s verification and vetting body, where lecturers had to meet various requirements for confirmation.

These include conducting research, publishing academic journals and papers in accredited peer-reviewed academic platforms, and supervising both Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students to completion.

Accordingly, Onono named the nine doctors who are now Associate Professors as Dr James Okello (Faculty of Medicine and Mental Health Department), Dr David Ross Olanya (Faculty of Business and Public Administration, Department of Public Administration) and Dr Stephen Wamala Kalule (Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Rural Development and Agribusiness).

Onono listed the other six as Dr Berliner A. Obiga (Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, Department of Security Studies), Dr Kenneth Olido (Faculty of Business and Public Administration, Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship), Dr Denis Ofoyoru Thaddeus (Faculty of Education and Humanities, Department of Education, Planning and Management), Dr Robert Opiro (Faculty of Science, Department of Biology), Dr Collins Okello (Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Biosystem Engineering, and also Dean of the Faculty), and Dr Sidonia Angom (taskforce chairperson of Moroto Institute, an extension of Gulu University).

He confirmed that all the above-mentioned senior lecturers are now Associate Professors, bringing the total to 23 from 14 previously.

Number of professors

Onono also said the university now boasts 10 full professors, including the deputy vice chancellor and the chancellor, describing it as a significant achievement for the institution.

He noted that with improved funding in the next financial year, the university hopes to further strengthen its senior academic staffing.

Onono also used the opportunity to reveal the total number of staff across academic, administrative and support categories, stating that the university currently has 657 staff members.

He said that of the 657 staff, 150 are administrative staff, 273 are academic staff, and 234 are support staff.
