The Government has allocated nearly sh90 billion to establish Iganga University, formerly known as Busoga University, as a new public university serving the Busoga sub-region.

Cabinet approved the move at its meeting on October 5, with the finance minister directed to provide the funds to establish the institution and enable it to begin operations.

The decision followed an initial proposal to establish Busoga University as a public university, but Cabinet resolved that the institution instead be named Iganga University.

The Minister of Education and Sports was authorized to work with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to prepare the legal instruments required to establish the university.

The education ministry will also seek Parliament's approval for the establishment of the institution. Under the plan, Namasagali will become a constituent college of Iganga University, with a focus on marine and fisheries studies.

The university will also incorporate several existing campuses in the Busoga sub-region whose land has already been handed over to the government. These include campuses in Bugiri, Namutumba, Bugabula, Kamuli and Jinja.

The Government said bringing the campuses under the new university will allow them to form part of a single public university structure in the region.

The establishment of the university is expected to expand access to public university education in Busoga while also providing a platform for specialised training in areas such as marine and fisheries studies.

The Cabinet resolution was announced by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Lumumba Kasule, during a media briefing at the Media Centre in Kampala on Tuesday (October 6).
