Utilisation of French language learning centres in Uganda will enable nationals to tap into regional trade opportunities, Belgian Ambassador to Uganda Hugues Chantry has said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 4th Edition of ‘Njogera Francais’ (I speak French) awards ceremony in Kampala on March 7, 2026, Chantry highlighted that French is a strategic language for diplomacy, regional integration and trade in the East African Community, where countries like Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo and Rwanda use it as an official language.

“Uganda is surrounded by countries which speak French. Regional trade partners of Uganda export from South Sudan, DR Congo, Rwanda and DRC. If you want to sell or buy more, learning French will keep you in business,” Chantry said.

The ambassador's call comes as Uganda celebrates Francophonie Month, with various events scheduled to promote the French language and culture. The events include a Francophonie Film Festival, French learners' activities, and a Belgian concert, among others.

Uganda and Belgium have strong diplomatic and trade ties, with Belgium being a significant investor in the country. In 2023, French companies invested $1.6 billion in Uganda, accounting for 53% of total foreign direct investment.

Promoting peace

The Belgian Ambassador commended Uganda's efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, citing the country's role in supporting peace operations in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The promotion of the French language is seen as a way to enhance Uganda's trade and economic co-operation with Francophone countries. Chantry noted that speaking French opens doors to international jobs and cultural exchange, benefiting individuals and the country as a whole.

Dr Agatha Tumwine, the president of the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APF) and a lecturer at the Makerere University School of Languages, added that as Uganda seeks to expand its trade and economic partnerships, the French language is expected to play a key role in unlocking new opportunities.

“The country's membership in regional organisations like the East African Community and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents opportunities for trade and investment with Francophone countries.”

Njogera Francais is an initiative spearheaded by Alliance Francaise de Kampala (AFK) in collaboration with the French embassy in Uganda and France Education International.

According to Loic Boivin, the director of Alliance Francaise de Kampala, French is a deeply African and highly dynamic language which connects the continent to markets, universities and professional networks all over the world.

“There are more than 300 million French speakers worldwide, and a clear majority of them live on the African continent. These encounters are possible because behind the institutions there are individuals who truly believe in the power of education, multilingualism and intercultural dialogue,” Boivin emphasised.

Learners excel in French language proficiency

A total of 23 pupils and students who excelled in French language proficiency were awarded certificates and prizes after demonstrating exceptional skills in speaking, writing, and comprehension.
