Five candidates who registered for the 2026 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams missed sitting their final exams that started today (October 12).

Two candidates from Kasilo County in Serere District did not turn up for their exams on the first day.

Michael Onyege, the supervisor overseeing six secondary schools at the Bugondo Sub-County headquarters, reported that out of 744 registered candidates, a girl and a boy from Kamod Secondary School went missing after registration.

Onyege, who also serves as the headteacher of Kamod Secondary School, said efforts to locate these candidates were unsuccessful as their known family phone numbers were unreachable, leaving only 237 candidates to sit for the exams.

Onyege also pointed out the challenge of shortage of desks in his school due to the high number of registered candidates, compounded by parents’ failure to pay development fees.

Fortunately, he noted that Esther Lucy Achom, the Serere District Woman legislator, provided 200 plastic chairs and a tent, while Kasilo County MP Peter Paul Emaju contributed 150 chairs and pledged to supply another tent for senior one and two students, so that they can create space for senior four candidates to use their classrooms and write their final exams.

Onyege expressed gratitude towards the MPs for the support, noting that they had planned to suspend classes for senior one and two classes to create room for senior four candidates to write their final exams.

Results from other schools showed that Kagwara Seed Secondary School had all 145 candidates present, Kadungulu Secondary School had 117 candidates, God’s Grace Secondary School had 60, Banak High School had 59, and Kamod High School had 114 candidates.

In Amuria District, Hellen Agadi, the headteacher of Wera Seed Secondary School, stated that only 171 out of the 174 registered candidates turned up for the UCE exams, adding that three students left the school after registration.

She added that the number of candidates for this year’s UCE has risen to 171 from 139 last year.

Meanwhile, in Ngora District, Eliphaz Opolot Ewalu, the headteacher of Ngora High School, reported that all the 335 candidates turned up to sit for their exams, comprising 169 girls and 166 boys.

Nationally, 503,214 candidates registered for the UCE examinations, which commenced today (October 12) with Mathematics and Chemistry papers.
