LUWEERO - The Vice Chancellor of Bugema University, Prof Israel Masiko Kafeero, has urged researchers to prioritise the practical application of research if it is to make a meaningful contribution to national and community development.
“Research only becomes truly valuable when it moves beyond academic publications to provide practical solutions that improve lives, influence policy, and drive sustainable development. Our responsibility as researchers is not merely to generate knowledge but to ensure that knowledge is translated into innovations that address the real needs of our communities,” Kafeero said.
He made the remarks while addressing participants at a two-day research conference organised by Bugema University and St. Peter’s University in memory of the late Dr. Eria Muwanguzi at Bugema main campus in Luweero on September 1, 2026.
Prof Kafeero said research should not end on library shelves or in academic journals but should be translated into innovative solutions that address society's pressing challenges.
He told participants drawn from African countries that universities have a responsibility to generate knowledge that improves livelihoods, informs public policy, advances technology, and promotes sustainable development.
Kafeero encouraged researchers, lecturers, and students to undertake problem-oriented studies that respond to the needs of communities while maintaining high standards of academic excellence and integrity.
He emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, partnerships with government agencies, industry, and development organisations to ensure research findings are effectively implemented.
He reaffirmed Bugema University's commitment to strengthening its research culture through mentorship, capacity building, and strategic partnerships that enhance knowledge generation and its application for the benefit of society.
Prof. Joshua Joseph Malago from Tanzania challenged governments across the globe to support scientists and researchers through increased funding to enable them to achieve their goals and contribute positively to society.
The conference was held in honour of Dr. Muwanguzi’s contribution to research and science. The late Dr. Muwanguzi headed the Research Department at Bugema University.
Through his dedication to research, he made a significant contribution to the advancement of science and research in higher education.
Prof. Malago noted that Dr. Muwanguzi’s contribution to research cannot be forgotten.
He emphasised the need to preserve and strengthen his legacy by promoting and enhancing research in institutions of higher learning. On his part, the Vice Chancellor St. Peter's University, Bombo, Dr Dorothy Businge Kakongoro Kabugo she hailed the late Muwanguzi for his contribution to research and research policies.
