The Ankole Diocese, one of the 39 dioceses in the church of Uganda, has appointed a new Chancellor and Deputy Chancellor. The diocesan Chancellor is meant to oversee all legal matters and provide strategic guidance to the diocese.

The Bishop of Ankole diocese, Rt Rev. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, who is also the dean of the province of the church of Uganda, announced the appointments on Thursday (October 8) alongside a solemn swearing-in ceremony for newly elected members of the 27th diocesan synod held at St. James Cathedral Ruharo.

Dr Benson Tusasirwe, a graduate from Cambridge University, was announced as the new Ankole Diocese chancellor, replacing Canon Ambassador Francis Butagira, who studied from Harvard University and has served Ankole diocese as Chancellor for 12 years.

In his remarks, Bishop Mwesigwa commended Ambassador Butagira for his exceptional 12-year service as Chancellor of Ankole Diocese.

“After three terms, it was found fitting that we get another chancellor and we thank God that we have gotten a new relatively young person in Dr Tusasirwe, a Christian from Mwizi. We thank God for the blessing we have gotten of very highly learned people,” Mwesigwa stated.

The Bishop urged the new leadership and synod members to uphold integrity, foster unity, and protect church property as they execute their mandates. He also appealed to all people involved in leadership to try to identify and surround themselves with the best of the best, choose people who are not selfish, who love their work, are competent and have qualifications.

“It is unfortunate that we live in times where you hear that even in politics, people are debating qualifications. How in the first place do you get someone who doesn’t have qualifications? Our system is faulty; I pray we get the rightful leaders for the rightful positions," he observed.
