The Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC) is set to graduate 782 students during its 17th Graduation Ceremony slated for November 20 at its campus in Jinja city.
The ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Col. (Rtd) Tom Butime.
According to the college Principal, Richard Kawere, the ceremony will be held under the theme: Advancing Service Excellence and Innovation for Africa’s Hospitality and Tourism Future.
“The theme for this year’s graduation highlights the critical role of professional skills, innovation, creativity and quality service delivery in strengthening Africa’s competitiveness as a tourism destination,” he told New Vision at his office in Jinja city.
Of the 782 graduands, 553 are apprentices who benefited from various sponsorship arrangements involving the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Inter-Seed Sector Development (ISSD) under the Enabel-supported WeWork project. The remaining 229 are students enrolled under the College’s regular training programmes.
“The high number of apprentices demonstrates the importance of strategic partnerships in expanding access to skills training and equipping young people with practical skills required by the labour market,” Kawere said.
He said the college continues to contribute to efforts aimed at addressing skills gaps, improving employability and creating opportunities for young people, particularly those from vulnerable communities.
Kawere said the ceremony will be attended by senior government officials, including the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Dr James Musinguzi, who will also deliver the commencement lecture.
“The graduation represents more than the awarding of certificates and diplomas. It reflects the institution’s continued transformation and ambition to establish itself as a centre of excellence in hospitality and tourism training,” he explained.
Kawere said the graduands are expected to apply their knowledge and practical competencies across hotels, restaurants, tourism enterprises, travel establishments and other service-related businesses. Of the 782 graduands, 561 are female while 221 are male, representing approximately 72% and 28%, respectively.
Ssembatya Anna Maria emerged is the overall best graduand with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.86, while Catherine Nabutiti topped the diploma category with a CGPA of 4.84.
