Ombachi Catholic Parish in Arua city is mourning one of its oldest parishioners, Serena Agonduru, who died peacefully at the age of 116.
Agonduru, who was reportedly born in 1910, died on August 6, 2026, at her home in Aliba-Odravu, Manibe subcounty, in Ayivu East, Arua city.
The parish priest of Ombachi Catholic Parish, Fr Romano Dada, said he initially doubted Agonduru's age because she appeared remarkably healthy for her age.
However, he later confirmed her age after personally checking her baptism records in the parish registry.
Father Dada said Agonduru lived a healthy life, mainly eating traditional foods and avoiding alcohol.
He encouraged the public to learn from Agonduru's lifestyle by eating healthy foods, staying physically active and avoiding alcohol and other harmful substances.
Agonduru's children remember her as a God-fearing, peaceful and hardworking mother who played a key role in keeping the family together.
Her 74-year-old daughter, Felemina Driwaru, said their mother taught them the fear of God and raised them with strong family values.
Another daughter, only known as Jita, remembers Agonduru as a mother who united the family, while Christine Angucia describes her as a peace-loving and active woman who was deeply involved in church activities.
Agonduru's son, Yakobo Nyamua, said the family was celebrating her life because she lived a long and fruitful life and cared for her children after their father died in the early 1980s.
Serena Agonduru is survived by more than 180 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was laid to rest on August 8, 2026, at her home in Aliba-Odravu, Ayivu East, Arua city.
