Kisubi Minor Seminary celebrates 75th anniversary

Kisubi Minor Seminary is now a platinum jubilee educational institution following the grand celebration of its 75^th anniversary, which took place at the seminary on Entebbe Road, in Wakiso District on June 27, 2026.

The celebration started with a pontifical thanksgiving mass presided over by the Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere. The concelebrants included Archbishop Dr Augustine Kasujja (Apostolic Nuncio), the Chargé d'Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature, Msgr. Georges Kwami, and over 300 other Catholic priests, most of whom were former students of the seminary.

The function had many interesting spectacles which created lasting memories for those who were in attendance.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the function was the seminary’s mass choir, which animated the Mass. The musical seminarians sang Western hymns, and also hymns by local composers (such as Fr. Dr James Kabuye and Fr. Dr Joseph Namukangula) with admirable expertise and understanding. They accompanied the hymns with wind, string and percussive instruments, adding even more colour to the liturgical celebration. The seminary’s bass ensemble was also at its best.

It was equally beautiful to see the seminary’s alumni of various cohorts reuniting and fellowshipping as they recalled and relived their old days and life at the seminary. Among them were veteran alumni such as Mzee John Chrysostom Sserwadda, a pioneer student (who joined the seminary at its inception in1951) and Archbishop Dr Augustine Kasujja (Apostolic Nuncio), who joined in 1970.

The messages delivered were also fascinating and deeply touching. Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere put it on the seminary’s staff and all the other stakeholders to ensure that they remain true to the objectives of the seminary’s founder, Archbishop Joseph Louis Cabana (White Father), whose greatest desire was to educate and skill future priests and lay men who are grounded in the faith, men who possess the virtues of integrity, hard work, and human solidarity.

His words were echoed by the Chargé d'Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature, Msgr. Georges Kwami, who put it to the seminary’s alumni, whether they are priests or laymen, to have a rich disposition of discipline and integrity.

Quoting the New Vision newspaper of June 25 (2026), Msgr, Kwami said: “Of all the seminarians who come to the seminary, only ten out of one hundred become priests. The rest go out in the world and serve humanity in various capacities. Dear alumni of Kisubi Seminary, wherever you are and whatever you do, be men of discipline and integrity. Be good ambassadors of the seminary.”

 The Rector of the seminary, Fr. Francis Ssengendo, assured the stakeholders that they would move on with even greater determination and commitment to the objectives of the founder.
