Former vice-president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has urged parents to emulate those who raise disciplined and patriotic children.

Ssekandi says it is these children who contribute meaningfully to their communities and the nation.

He made the call during the 40-day Dua (prayer session) for the late Isaac Kigozi, son of senior presidential adviser on diaspora affairs Amb. Abbey Walusimbi.

The event that was held at Walusimbi’s village residence in Luwero district on February 21, 2026, brought together high-profile dignitaries to honour the young man’s legacy.

Kigozi, a passionate youth mobiliser and advocate for diaspora engagement, passed away suddenly on January 8.

Speakers described him as hardworking, respectful and deeply patriotic, saying he embodied the National Resistance Movement’s values and had an unwavering love for Uganda.

Ssekandi recalled meeting Kigozi at Kingdom Kampala, where presidential advisors have offices. Ssekandi described Kigozi as a diligent young man, who often walked through the corridors to his father’s office, consistently demonstrating responsibility, respect and commitment to national ideals, including honour for the flag and country.

Ssekandi also lauded Walusimbi for effectively managing diaspora affairs by uniting Ugandans abroad, fostering love for their country and mobilising them in line with President Yoweri Museveni’s vision and government priorities.

Employment and industrial relations state minister Esther Anyakun described Kigozi as more than a colleague, but a brother and friend lost too soon.

Anyakun said at the time of his death, Kigozi was spearheading a youth-focused project aimed at harnessing diaspora opportunities and attracting foreign investors, some of whom are already active in Uganda.

Anyakun emphasised Kigozi’s decision to remain engaged in national development rather than seeking opportunities in Western countries. She described the diaspora as a vital constituency and said the ministry of labour’s migrant workers division protects Ugandans abroad through bilateral agreements.

Anyakun said Uganda receives approximately shillings 34 billion annually through formal channels.

However, she acknowledged the ongoing challenges, particularly involving individuals who migrate irregularly or through unregistered entities, which complicates protection efforts.

Anyakun reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding bilateral agreements and combating human trafficking.

Mawokota North MP-elect Amelia Kyambadde expressed deep sorrow at Kigozi’s passing, describing him as a hardworking young man.

Kyambadde thanked the Buganda residents for re-electing President Museveni and the NRM and pledged continued efforts to fight poverty, ensure peace, improve education, build roads and enhance service delivery.

Former youth state minister Amb. James William Kinobe praised Walusimbi as a reliable long-time friend and a key architect of Uganda’s labour externalisation programme.
Kinobe dismissed claims of “brain drain”, saying the diaspora is a vital source of productive employment.

Luwero resident District Commissioner Mariam Seguya Nalubega described Kigozi as a dedicated young patriot.

Religious leaders call for unity

The head of Dawa at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Sheikh Ibrahim Murushid Luwemba, represented Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.

Luwemba commended Walusimbi for his service to Islam through various charitable initiatives and as a board member of the Islamic Call University College.. Luwemba urged Muslims to donate to charity, attend Juma prayers, support the needy and promote unity and peace.
