Emulate governor Bukumunhe's legacy — Minister Babalanda
Describing the deceased as a patriot, President Museveni noted that Bukumunhe was among the team of eminent economists at the Central Bank who supported the NRM government's economic reforms following the 1986 victory.
Describing the late Deputy Governor's death as a huge loss to Busoga, the minister urged the people of the sub-region to emulate the departed economist by embracing hard work as a means of fighting poverty.
BUGWERI - The Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, has challenged Ugandans, particularly the people of Busoga, to emulate the late former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Perez Seith Tenywa Bukumunhe, who built and left behind a legacy of distinguished excellence in public service.
The minister made the rallying call while representing President Yoweri Museveni at the burial of the veteran economist at Busesa in Ibulanku Sub-county, Bugweri District.
In her address to mourners, Babalanda stressed the need for all Ugandans, especially the Basoga, to always strive for excellence in whatever opportunities they are given.
"The President has sent me here today to represent him at the send-off of our son of the soil, the late Perez Tenywa Bukumunhe. This shows the high regard in which the President held him, and it is all because he excelled in his work as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda," Babalanda said.

She explained that by fighting poverty, the Basoga would be able to contribute meaningfully to national development, just as the late Bukumunhe did, whose legacy in stabilising Uganda's economy during a difficult period remains well documented.
President mourns Bukumunhe
At the burial, Minister Babalanda delivered President Museveni's condolence message to the people of Busoga on the loss of one of their most eminent sons.
In the message, the President hailed the former Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor for his role in implementing economic reforms that stabilised the country's collapsed economy after 1986.
"These reforms led to the stabilisation of Uganda's economy by ensuring price stability, restoring the productive capacity of the economy, rehabilitating economic and social infrastructure, and maintaining fiscal discipline," the President said.
"The President vividly remembers the late Bukumunhe's selfless contribution to the nation during that period and later in the other capacities in which he served. He therefore commiserates with the bereaved family and prays for the deceased's soul to rest in eternal peace," Minister Babalanda added.
The deceased
Hailing from the Abaise Mulawa Clan, Mzee Perez Seith Tenywa Bukumunhe was a distinguished civil servant, author, politician and Busoga cultural enthusiast.
He served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda from 1986 to 1990. He also served as Chairperson of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority and was a member of the Constituent Assembly between 1993 and 1995, where he participated in drafting the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.
A respected cultural leader, Mzee Bukumunhe headed the Abaise Mulawa Clan until his death at the age of 90 on July 2, 2026. He was also a revered senior member of the Busoga Kingdom's Governing Council of Clans.
He was buried on Saturday at his home in Busesa, Ibulanku Sub-county, Bugweri District.
