Pastor Joseph Okidi, one of the most celebrated gospel singers in Uganda's northern sub-region of Acholi, has succumbed to injuries he sustained in a road crash last week.

Okidi, the General Overseer of Revival Fountain Ministries, died of multiple organ failure on Monday afternoon at the International Hospital Kampala (IHK), where he had been referred to after sustaining severe brain injuries in a crash along the Gulu–Juba Highway.

He was initially admitted to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu city, where his condition prompted an outpouring of public prayers and support.

His death brings a heartbreaking end to a week marked by hope and collective intercession from the community.

'Leaves a big gap'

Uganda's Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, led tributes to the fallen pastor, describing him as a man of deep faith and exceptional leadership.

“Pastor Okidi has left a very big gap that will not be easily filled,” he said, emphasising his spiritual and social impact.

Okidi, fondly known as a “digital evangelist,” was a spiritual leader widely celebrated for his uplifting gospel hits such as 'Nyingi Leng' (Your Name is Holy), which inspired many across northern Uganda.

Before dedicating his life fully to ministry, Okidi had an impressive record of civic service.

He previously served as Gulu University Guild President and later as an alumni representative on the university’s governing council, roles through which he earned deep respect among peers and the community.

Family, community mourns

In a statement, the family of John Brown Owilli Otuukene expressed profound sorrow but also gratitude for Pastor Okidi’s life and ministry.

“We hail The Almighty God for having given us Pastor Joseph Okidi to serve His people. We also glorify The Lord God for calling Pastor Joseph Okidi to enjoy eternal life in His Kingdom," the statement read.

The family also extended heartfelt thanks to all who offered prayers, financial support, and encouragement during his hospitalisation.

The news of Okidi’s death has shaken the Gulu community, where he was regarded as both a spiritual pillar and mentor.

“Pastor Joseph wasn’t just a preacher; he was the foundation of our faith community,” said Sarah Acan, a member of Revival Fountain Church.

Patrick Oryema, a resident of Pece Laroo, described the loss as “a big blow to the Gulu University fraternity”.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in due course.
