Catholic Church, Makerere University mourn Fr Ssebwalunnyo
Ssemogerere commended Ssebwalunyo for his commitment to troubled and abandoned people, whose mental and emotional stability he always restored through prayer and professional counselling.

The Catholic church and Makerere University fraternity have paid tribute to Rev. Fr. John Bosco Ssebwalunnyo, a priest of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala and former Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology at Makerere University.
Ssebwalunnyo died at Lubaga Hospital on August 31, 2026, at the age of 74. During a mass held at Kisubi Seminary on September 2, 2026, before he was laid to rest there, the Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, described Fr. Ssebwalunnyo as a zealous priest, who preached the Gospel and administered the Catholic Sacraments with joy, dedication and conviction.

Fr. Norman Nsereko, a contemporary and professional colleague, also spoke highly of Ssebwalunnyo’s deep sense of humour, friendship, hard work and devotion to the divine office.
The Vicar-General of Kampala Archdiocese, Msgr. Rogers Kabuye Mukasa, a former student of the deceased, also expressed deep admiration of Ssebwalunnyo’s extraordinary neatness, loyalty and dutiful disposition.
Ssebwalunnyo was also deeply admired by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Dr Augustine Kasujja, the Bishop of Masaka, Serverus Jjumba, and members of his family, who included his nephew Paulo Ssebaggala.

The Rev. Fr. Assoc. Prof. Ssebwalunnyo hailed from Biikira, in Kyotera district.

He started his priestly studies at Katigondo National Major Seminary, after graduating with a Bachelors of Education degree from Makerere University. In 1987, he joined St. Mary’s National Seminary Ggaba for his Theological Studies. Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga ordained him a priest at Lubaga Cathedral on July 8, 1990.
He subsequently served in various capacities. He was at one time the Religious Education Advisor of Kampala Archdiocese and Board member of St. Peter’s Primary School Nsambya.
He also served as archdiocesan Vocations Director, Chaplain of Namilyango College (1996), and St. Mary’s Secondary School Nkozi (1997), Chaplain of Our Lady Queen of Africa Girls Secondary School Rubaga, and assistant chaplain of Makerere University (2003). While at Makerere, he also did Masters and Doctoral studies in Counselling Psychology.
He was talented in languages. He spoke fluent English, French, German and Luganda. He was also a super footballer.
