Investors on the MTN counter exchanged sh12.02b worth of shares during the week ending August 21 at the Uganda Securities Exchange, according to trading data from Crested Capital.
The telco firm accounted for about 90% of the weekly turnover that stood at sh13.46b ($3.62m), down from sh14.02b ($3.78m) the previous week. Total shares traded, however, rose to 43.25 million from 42.24 million, with nine counters active during the week.
MTN was the most actively traded counter, with 27.62 million shares changing hands. The stock remained flat at sh435, suggesting that the heavy trading was driven more by the volume of shares exchanged than by price movements.
Stanbic Holdings was the second largest contributor to turnover, recording sh1.17b from 11.78 million shares. Its share price rose 6.16% to sh101.
Umeme traded sh188.79m from nearly 3 million shares, while Bank of Baroda recorded sh33.07m from 540,690 shares. Airtel traded sh27.18m from 159,463 shares and gained 0.26% to sh170.45.
Quality Chemical Industries traded sh22m from 137,500 shares, while dfcu recorded sh888,000 from 2,635 shares. NIC Holdings traded sh68,104, and New Vision Group recorded sh19,717 from 133 shares.
The USE All Share Index rose 2.70% to 2,300.18 points while the local index gained 1.50% to 213.02 points.
NIC Holdings share price rose 5.68% to sh9.30. Baroda gained 4.24% to sh63. New Vision fell 0.67% to sh148. MTN Uganda, dfcu, Quality Chemical Industries and Umeme were unchanged.
Among the cross-listed counters, Nation Media Group fell 9.24% to sh362.12, while Centum Investment declined 3.79% to sh494.33.
On the other hand, Jubilee Holdings gained 7.55% to sh12,171.39, Equity Group rose 4.33% to sh2,672.82, KCB Group added 4.78% to sh2,586.60, and Kenya Airways gained 5.68% to sh163.82. East African Breweries rose 1.88% to sh7,917.87.
