UNIGWA honours local innovator for advancing community impact

The Uganda National Innovative Graduates’ Wealth Association (UNIGWA) has recognised local entrepreneur Bernard Feni for his outstanding contribution to community empowerment and innovation.
The award was presented at the company’s offices in Kamwokya, Kampala, where UNIGWA officials applauded Feni’s efforts in mentoring youth and promoting local participation in Uganda’s mineral sector.
UNIGWA president Derrick Kiwanuka said the recognition was aimed at celebrating individuals who are creating tangible impact in society.
“We appreciate him for coming up with an innovative initiative that supports communities. Through his foundation, many people have been mentored and guided to improve their livelihoods."

Kiwanuka said Feni’s work in establishing a locally owned gold refinery has not only challenged foreign dominance in the sector, but also opened up employment and skills development and job opportunities for Ugandans.
“We decided to recognise him because he represents innovation and resilience. This is someone who has ventured into a sector that was previously dominated by foreign players, and his work has the potential to create jobs and transform communities."
Benard Feni said the idea was born out of the need to challenge foreign dominance in the sector and position Ugandans at the center of value addition.
“I asked myself why Ugandans should remain spectators in an industry that belongs to them. At the time, all gold refineries in Uganda were foreign-owned. That is when I decided to take the initiative and establish EuroGold Refinery,” Feni said.
He noted that the venture, which started as a bold and unconventional idea, gradually gained support from the government and key stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
“With government support and policy alignment, we have been able to change the narrative around gold trade in Uganda. Today, we are not only refining locally but also competing at international standards,” he explained.
“We have proven that Ugandans can meet global standards. In fact, a significant percentage—between 70% and 80%—of our workforce is made up of indigenous Ugandans. We train locally, leverage technology, and continue to improve our capacity,” he said.
UNIGWA said the award is part of a broader initiative to inspire innovation and recognise individuals whose work contributes to economic transformation and youth empowerment.
Kiwanuka emphasised that celebrating such pioneers is critical in motivating more Ugandans to invest in high-impact sectors.
“It is not easy to be a pioneer and an investor at the same time. By appreciating such individuals, we are encouraging others to believe in their potential and take bold steps toward wealth creation,” he said.
The association reiterated its commitment to promoting practical skills and supporting graduates, noting that partnerships with innovators like Feni are key to unlocking opportunities for young people across the country.
