Uganda Airlines has signed a partnership with South African airline Airlink, a move that ties their networks together and is designed to make travelling across the continent simpler.
The interline agreement, Uganda Airlines said in a statement, will allow passengers to book a single ticket for journeys that combine flights from both airlines. The primary connection point will be Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport.
For a traveller starting in Entebbe, Uganda, this means they can check in once and have their bags automatically transferred to final destinations across Airlink’s network. This removes the need for multiple bookings and checking in again during a layover in South Africa.
Uganda Airlines customers will gain access to more than 45 destinations served by Airlink within Southern Africa. These include popular spots such as Cape Town, Durban, Victoria Falls, Windhoek in Namibia, and Gaborone in Botswana.
The arrangement is reciprocal, meaning Airlink’s customers will also find it easier to connect onto Uganda Airlines’ flights to destinations in East and Central Africa.
“This interline agreement is a significant step in our aspirations of making intra-African travel easier. It provides our customers with unparalleled convenience and choice when travelling to key destinations across Southern Africa, all on a single ticket,” Adedayo Olawuyi, chief commercial officer, Uganda Airlines, said.
Katherine Whelan, Airlink's chief commercial officer, said the partnership will strengthen ties between the regions.
“It’s a win-win for both airlines and our customers. It opens up a vital gateway in East Africa for our customers, and, in turn, provides Ugandan travellers with efficient and direct access to Southern Africa's key economic and tourism centres,” Whelan said.
