Transport unions launch Union Dduuka digital marketplace

KAMPALA - The Transport Union Alliance has launched Union Dduuka, a digital marketplace aimed at helping transport sector members and their stockists reach customers across Uganda through online ordering and delivery.
The platform was unveiled on Thursday (August 20th) morning at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
According to the Union’s Product Advisor, Fred Segona, the platform will allow customers to order products from registered stockists through the app and have them delivered to their doorsteps.
He said the system is intended to widen the market for stockists while giving customers easier access to genuine products without having to make return trips to shops.
The launch also introduced Wetaasa loans, a digital lending facility intended to provide small loans to stockists through the RukaPay platform.

Segona said the initiative is part of efforts to address some of the financial challenges faced by small businesses while also creating additional opportunities for boda boda riders through delivery services.
Rohana Turinawe, who represented RukaPay in Uganda, said the technology was being developed to make transactions easier for transport sector members, their families and customers.
She said the digital system brings together commerce, payments and other services on a platform designed around the needs of the sector.
The launch was attended by leaders from the Transport Union Alliance, led by Frank Mawejje, with Rashid Ssekindi representing the taxi union, Asadu Kisitu representing truck drivers and Umar Kakaire representing the bus union.
The leaders welcomed the new digital system, saying it could open additional income opportunities for members and help the transport sector adapt to changing technology and business models.
