The Ministry of Works and Transport has reinstated all driving licences and classes of over 5,000 commercial drivers who were on the verge of losing their jobs due to variations in their documents.

Several commercial drivers including taxi, bus, lorry and trailer drivers had their driving licences cancelled and in other instances, their driving classes lowered due to a mismatch in personal details in both NIRA and the Uganda Drivers Licensing system.

Several drivers went ahead to petition the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Head of State to intervene claiming this arrangement has forced many out of jobs since they are unqualified and, therefore, cannot be hired for professional driving jobs.

In a meeting held at the Office of President Friday, April 26, between the  Ministry of Works and Transport and the drivers, the Chief Licensing Officer of Vehicles in the  Ministry of Works and Transport, Winston Katushabe ordered the reinstatement of all driving licences and classes that were cancelled.

Effective May 01, 2024, all drivers can get their renewed licenses plus all classes.
