Boda boda crashes, attributed to mostly indiscipline of the riders, are still very high especially, within urban areas, Police said Monday.

Police also said that they have arrested "several" people who have been masquerading as Police officers.

Lawrence Niwabiine, the Police's director of traffic, told reporters at the security weekly press briefing at Naguru in Kampala that others will be netted.

"Those hiding, let them hide, but they will not come back to those locations," he warned.

Niwabiine also warned motorists who continue to violate traffic laws, saying there is a time within which a ticket should be paid.

He cautioned offenders who misuse the allocated time and choose not to pay.

"When offenders pay, it goes to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) portal. This then becomes a URA matter and that of the Auditor General.

"The work of the traffic police directorate is to enforce the law. Once the law is given to us, we enforce it."

Calling it a "serious concern", Police said solving the indiscipline of boda boda riders will require a multisectoral approach.

Police has urged pedestrians to take charge of erratic motorcyclists, who ride on pedestrian walkways, saying that the traffic officers are not sufficient to handle such matters since they are placed in specific locations to control the flow of traffic.

But there are also positives.

On the flip side, Niwabiine said that around 70% of boda boda riders had complied with safety requirements, such as wearing crash helmets and reflector jackets, following a Police directive.

He said about 5,000 boda boda cyclists are processing driving licences.
