The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has embarked on a training programme aimed at equipping Ugandan entrepreneurs with skills in packaging.

This was revealed by the Minister of State for Trade, Francis Mwebesa, while officiating at the Master Class Training on Packaging Technology organised by the ministry in collaboration with the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), with support from the World Bank. The training took place on August 5, 2025, at Protea Hotel in Kololo.

“We are equipping our industry professionals with the latest knowledge and skills in packaging technology, standards, and sustainability. These are essential if we are to position Uganda as a reliable source of quality, value-added products on the global market,” Mwebesa said.

Mwebesa further explained that packaging is not only about wrapping or branding, but also a critical enabler and strategic tool for product protection, shelf-life extension, quality assurance, and market access.

“Poor or substandard packaging continues to undermine the export potential of many Ugandan products, particularly agro-processed goods and artisanal products. The training will ensure that people meet international standards, while preserving product integrity,” he said.

The ongoing training will equip participants with tips on ideal packaging materials, principles of branding, labelling, and product identity.

One of the trainers, Prof. Moses Muwanga, advised participants to avoid misleading and confusing consumers with incorrect labels and inaccurate information on product ingredients.
