Premier Nabbanja inspects Moroto Cement factory progress

The Prime Minister said the factory will reduce Uganda’s import bill and contribute to socio-economic development and balance of payments.

The Prime Minister Nabbanja Robinah has inspected the ongoing works of Moroto Clinker Cement Factory to establish the progress of the multi-billion project in Karamoja region.

The visit follows a directive by President Yoweri Museveni to ensure that the project implementation is expedited. The Moroto Clinker cement factory is located in Katikekile, Moroto district. 

“I want to express my gratitude to the people of Moroto in particular, and Karamoja in general, for embracing the Government’s wealth-creation initiatives, such as the Parish Development Model and supporting projects like the Moroto cement factory, which are key in community transformation,” Nabbanja said while interacting with the site managers.

A release from her office states that the premier remarked that Government has implemented various interventions in Moroto and Karamoja in general to promote socioeconomic transformation.

She also observed that, "Besides creating jobs for our communities Moroto District, this factory will contribute to the Government’s mineral value-addition strategy and socioeconomic transformation. The leaders here should mobilise the communities of Moroto to support and actively monitor the development of this factory because it is a key national investment whose benefits will be felt across the region andMoroto and Uganda in general," she added.

Uganda spends between $200 million and $300 million on clinker imports each year.

The Prime Minister said the factory will reduce Uganda’s import bill and contribute to socio-economic development and balance of payments.

Nabbanja's delegation included ministers: Dr Monica Musenero (energy and mineral development), John Baptist Looki (Karamoja affairs) , Siraji Musa Ali (state minister for Works) and Beatrice Anywar for Environment.

Other commitments 

Dr Musenero assured the prime minister and the people of Karamoja that the government had already released funds for the construction of the much needed dam that will provide water to the factory.

Relatedly, Siraji Musa Ali, the state minister for works, said that works on major roads connecting to the factory are progressing well despite some delays due to unforeseen challenges.

Minister Looki lauded the NRM government for the peace and security in the region that has spurred the development of factories, which was unheard of in the previous governments.

Beatrice Anywar, state minister for environment, assured the management of the factory that her ministry is ready to offer any services needed to expedite the establishment of the factory.
