Postbank Uganda, which is set to rebrand to Pearl Bank Uganda, has been awarded the prestigious Sustainability Certification by the European Organisation for Sustainable Development (EOSD).
This milestone validates the bank’s sustained commitment to advancing sustainable practices that are aligned with its purpose of fostering prosperity for Ugandans. The official certificate handover took place in Germany on September 25, 2025.
EOSD, headquartered in Germany, is an internationally recognised institution that plays a leading role in promoting sustainable development across multiple industries, particularly in the financial sector.
The organisation partners with banks and other institutions worldwide to embed sustainability into their business models, promote best practices for social and economic progress, and support the protection of natural resources.
Through its Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative, EOSD has established a rigorous set of principles that serve as benchmarks for responsible financial institutions.
The certification that Postbank has received distinguishes it as an institution that has embraced a holistic approach to sustainability. This recognition sets the Bank apart from others in the region that may not have fully embedded responsible practices into their operations.
In his remarks, Julius Kakeeto, the Managing Director of Postbank Uganda, explained that the certification is aligned with the Bank’s 5-year strategy launched in 2024. That strategy was designed to reposition the Bank as a purpose-driven institution that integrates sustainability into all areas of its operations.
Kakeeto said the Bank’s strategic focus ensures that sustainability is no longer treated as a side activity but is fully embedded in its products, services, and processes.
He highlighted that this shift enables the Bank to go beyond the traditional objective of profit-making and deliver lasting impact for society, the economy, and the environment.
“As an indigenous Bank, Postbank is committed to fostering prosperity for Ugandans through advancing financial inclusion, stimulating entrepreneurship, and extending services to communities across the country. We are particularly focused on powering small and medium enterprises because they are the backbone of economic transformation. By supporting these enterprises in priority sectors, we create jobs, enhance incomes, and contribute to building a strong and competitive economy,” Kakeeto noted.
He further highlighted the role of innovation in advancing sustainability. The Bank’s digital wallet, Wendi, is one of the flagship tools being used to promote inclusive growth. “Our Wendi platform is at the forefront of financial inclusion.
With Wendi, every Ugandan who owns a mobile phone can save, invest, pay bills, and send or receive money both locally and internationally. The service is quick, affordable, and secure, which makes it a game changer for many people who were previously excluded from formal banking,” he said.
The certification was applauded by Arshad Rab, the Chief Executive Officer of EOSD and Chairman of the Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative.
Rab observed that Postbank has made bold steps in aligning its strategy with the global sustainability agenda.
He remarked that more than ever before, customers and business partners are keen to associate themselves with institutions that are driven by impact rather than only profits. This global trend is creating opportunities for forward-looking financial players to attract responsible investors, support businesses that champion sustainability, and demonstrate that economic value and social good can be achieved together.
“The certification for Postbank is proof that profitability and sustainability can move together. Institutions that adopt this approach are not only resilient but also highly competitive in the long run,” Rab said.
This latest recognition comes on the back of other recent achievements. In June 2025, Postbank Uganda received five accolades and eleven certificates during the Bank of Uganda’s Agriculture Credit Facility and Small Business Recovery Fund award ceremony.
