I think we can do even more if more women are economically empowered, Nabbanja said.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja says life is all about empowering women in leadership. She has, therefore, appealed to women in high places to help others get there and make a real difference.

“I am asking you to foster economic empowerment and, ensure young girls stay in school, all for a more empowered and educated society. This is what is called a fundamental change” Nabbanja says.

According to Nabbanja, the Government has been working hard to create a supportive environment where women leaders actively uplift and advance the well-being of their fellow women and young girls.

“But you know what? I think we can do even more if more women are economically empowered. We have a reason to celebrate as Parliament has more than 34 percent women representation. They have grabbed positions that were once only for the guys. Go, girls! Go Girls!” she adds.

She called at Hotel Africa during a Women’s Day banquet on March 1, 2024.

Sarah Kagingo, the vice-chairperson of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), however, decried what she termed as the high cost of borrowing money from financial institutions. She pointed out that women, who dominate the private sector, struggle to secure loans due to a lack of collateral, and the interest rates are just over the top.

According to Jane Nandaula, the executive director of Profile Communications, “this is all about celebrating, getting inspired and collaborating. At this Women’s Day banquet, we have reason to hail the remarkable achievements of women, laying the foundation for a better future. Big shout out to the government for better health services and access to education but, we need more support for women, or we might end up depending on the men again".

According to Nandaula, the secret sauce is to invest in women if we want to speed up progress.
