Music Review: Love Commissioner – Rema ft David Lutalo

May 25, 2024

Love Commissioner is something of a contradiction – a song where the artistes sound amazing, with a melody that is vague in places and is rescued by its hook, and has something of a yummy groove if afro-beat is your thing.

Rema tends to collaborate pretty well with male singers (Linda, where she teams up with Chris Evans, comes to mind) so this collaboration was almost inevitable.

David Lutalo is the sort of artiste that has a huge female fan base, because he apparently speaks their language, i.e. the language of love and romance (gags).

Rema is what the kids call ‘goals’ – the type of woman that other Ugandan women aspire to be, the one that famously stood up for her rights and walked out on Eddy Kenzo and replaced him with the dapper gynaecologist that was Dr. Hamza Ssebunya.
Heck, she even got a hit single out of the whole ordeal. Sili Muyembe is one of the most easily recognisable songs in town, and was a feminist anthem at one point.

I have always thought Kenzo and Rema are geniuses when it comes to the public relations game. They somehow manage to stay relevant, even when they are not that interesting as human beings. They should teach a class.

Even musically speaking, it’s a no brainer – Lutalo is something of a crooner, while Rema has some pretty gorgeous vocals on her. Anyone who can throw shade as sassily as she does on Sili Muyembe and sound good doing it has impressive vocals.

These two artistes brought their formidable talents together on Love Commissioner.
The song falls within the afro-beat genre. If anything, it fits seamlessly within that definition. From the get go, the first thing that hits you is that groove.

The melody is not exactly the most memorable thing you will have heard this year, especially with regards to the verse. It is the hook where things start to come together.

Also, the two singers sound great – they are perfect counterfoil for each other. Rema is in her comfort zone – the song requires the female vocal to sound sweet and sultry, and few people pull off that combo as comfortably as Rema.

And Lutalo? Well he croons his way through the song, somewhat predictably.
I imagine the song is trending because of the novelty of having these two artistes on the same project.

Love Commissioner is something of a contradiction – a song where the artistes sound amazing, with a melody that is vague in places and is rescued by its hook, and has something of a yummy groove if afro-beat is your thing.

What does stand out is the vocal chemistry here – the harmonies are gorgeous, and
these two sound heavenly together. I hope they try something like this again, but with an even more definitive melody.
