MTN Mobile Money Limited (MoMo) has appointed Phrase Lubega as its new managing director.

Lubega takes over from Richard Yego. Sarah Bateta Okwi, who is the chief finance officer at MTN MoMo, had been serving as the acting managing director since March this year.

Lubega has more than 30 years in telecommunications, information technology and financial services. Most recently, he served as interim managing director of MoMo Payment Service Bank in Nigeria, where he focused on strategy, digital banking and new product launches that drove revenue growth and better efficiency.

Within the MTN Group, he has held roles including Group Executive for Fintech Commercial Operations and General Manager for Commercial and Go-to-Market.

Earlier in Uganda, he led Mobile Financial Services as General Manager, launching products such as MoKash, and served as Chief Information Officer, modernising IT systems that supported mobile money expansion.

Serigne Dioum, MTN Group Fintech CEO, said Lubega’s market knowledge and execution skills make him the right person to strengthen the business in Uganda.

“His leadership will be instrumental as we continue to expand access to inclusive, secure and innovative digital financial solutions," Dioum said.

MTN MoMo Board Chairperson Sylvia Mulinge said: “We are pleased to appoint Phrase Lubega to lead MTN Mobile Money Uganda into its next phase of growth. His deep understanding of the business, strong governance experience and proven leadership across the MTN footprint position him well to drive sustainable value for all stakeholders. We also extend our sincere appreciation to Sarah Bateta Okwi for her steady leadership during the interim period.”
