The newly appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Cooperation), Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, has pledged to use his financial expertise and regional partnerships to expand market opportunities for Ugandan products and support the country's ten-fold economic growth strategy.

Kasolo made the commitment on June 11, 2026, during a handover ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Kampala, where he officially assumed office from the outgoing minister, John Mulimba.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kasolo said strengthening regional cooperation would be key to securing wider markets for Ugandan goods and improving household incomes.

He said Uganda must work closely with regional blocs such as the East African Community (EAC), the Great Lakes Region and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to create more opportunities for local producers.

“Our people are producing things like matooke and eggs in surplus now. It is vital for them to sell on the global front because it will make them economically uplifted,” he said.

With the positions of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for International Affairs yet to be assumed due to ongoing dual citizenship queries involving the proposed office holders, Kasolo said he would provide the necessary political leadership at the ministry in the interim.

“I pledge to serve with integrity and diligence so that the people of Uganda benefit from harmonious regional cooperation of Uganda across the region,” he said.

Kasolo also thanked President Yoweri Museveni for entrusting him with the role and pledged to fulfil his responsibilities diligently.

Call for increased ministry funding

During the handover ceremony, outgoing minister Mulimba urged Kasolo to advocate for increased funding for the foreign affairs ministry to enable it to continue delivering effective diplomatic services.

Kasolo previously served as microfinance and small enterprises state minister from June 2016 to May 2026. He is also the Member of Parliament for Kyotera County.
