As the Government advances its technology in electric automotives, a significant leap has been already realised with Kiira Motors Corporation making bus sales worth sh21.6 billion despite being in the early stages of production.

Presenting the 2026/27 national budget at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds today (June 11, 2026), Finance Minister Henry Musasizi said the Corporation has secured more orders for 450 buses from Uganda and across the region.

“The performance of the Jinja-based vehicle manufacturer demonstrates the country's growing industrial and technological capabilities. Commissioning the Kiira vehicle plant in Jinja marked a major milestone in Uganda's industrialisation journey and demonstrates the country's growing technological capabilities," Musasizi noted.

According to the minister, the Kiira Motors Vehicle Plant today has the capacity to produce up to 2,500 buses annually.

He said the growth indicates the country’s efforts to promote local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported vehicles, a sector that has traditionally contributed significantly to Uganda's import bill.

Musasizi said confidence, quality and relaiability in the locally manufactured buses was further demonstrated through the successful "Pearl to Cape" electric expedition, during which the Kayoola Electric Bus travelled more than 13,000 kilometres across the African continent.

Over the years, the project evolved into a government-backed automotive company tasked with spearheading Uganda's vehicle manufacturing industry. The Government has since invested billions of shillings in developing the automotive ecosystem, culminating in the establishment of the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja.

The company has since produced several buses, including Kayoola electric and diesel buses, which have been supplied to public and private transport operators in Uganda and neighbouring countries.
