Housing Finance Bank and Interswitch have launched an agency banking partnership that lets the bank’s customers deposit, withdraw and check balances at more than 23,000 Quickteller agents.

Officials said the new arrangement gives its customers access to cash deposits, withdrawals and balance enquiries at Quickteller outlets in towns, trading centres and rural areas. Services are available outside normal banking hours. Housing Finance Bank operates about 22 branches.

Moris Seguya, Interswitch Uganda Country General Manager, said: “Our goal is to make financial services simpler, accessible and more convenient for every Ugandan. Welcoming Housing Finance Bank to the Quickteller Agency Banking network is another important step towards achieving this.”

Interswitch has signed similar agency banking deals with other institutions in recent months. These include Centenary Bank, Tropical Bank and Pride Bank. In those arrangements, customers also gain access to Quickteller agents, and some banks have issued Verve cards that work on Interswitch’s ATM and point of sale network.

The two organisations already work together on Interswitch’s domestic switching services, which allow customers to use ATMs across connected banks. The agency banking deal extends that relationship into everyday cash transactions.

Robert Kusiima, chief operations officer at Housing Finance, said: “Over just a short pilot period, we have seen over sh49b moving through this partnership.”

Ivan Kakembo, the bank’s Head of Distribution and Alternate Channels, said: “Our partnership with Interswitch signifies that we are taking service to the customers.”

Interswitch has operated in Uganda since 2010 and is licensed by the Bank of Uganda under the National Payment Systems Act for switching, agency payments and Verve cards. Its Quickteller agent numbers have grown steadily to over 20,000.
