The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Eng. Irene Pauline Batebe has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing the uptake of clean energy in schools.
The commitment was made on her behalf by Eng. Herbert Abigaba, Principal Energy Officer, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, who represented her at the Vivo Energy Uganda demonstration on how schools can use a safer, cleaner, and more reliable cooking solution.
She commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with the government’s commitment to accelerating clean-energy uptake. This is coupled with other projects, such as the extension of solar power to schools, with funding worth $5.5m from the World Bank.
“As a government, we would like to commend Vivo Energy Uganda and partners for supporting national efforts to promote sustainable cooking alternatives, mostly in schools where too much firewood is consumed.”
His comments came on the sidelines of Vivo Energy Uganda, conducting a demonstration on how schools can benefit from using clean energy to cook for their students. The session brought together head teachers from Church of Uganda-founded schools.
Speaking during the event, Joanita Mukasa Menya, managing director at Vivo Energy Uganda, highlighted the project’s expected impact.
“The safe, efficient, and cost-effective solution for cooking we are delivering to schools is meant to relieve chefs who will no longer have to spend nights cooking; they can now prepare meals in the morning like anyone else. Beyond saving time, we’re preventing respiratory illnesses caused by smoke inhalation,” she noted.
Economically, clean gas offers long-term savings for institutions. Many schools currently spend substantial amounts on firewood, which often becomes more expensive due to scarcity and transportation costs.
Vivo Energy Uganda continues to champion the expansion of clean-cooking technologies and remains dedicated to supporting schools and communities on their journey toward safe, sustainable energy use.
