Members of the National Entrepreneur and Traders Association (NETA) have asked the government to expedite the process of financial support to individuals whose property was destroyed during recent heavy rains in Kampala.
Records from the association state that bout 400 traders lost their property during the downpour which occurred last month along the Nakivubo Drainage Channel.
Their leaders report that each of them awaits financial support from the government so that they can restock their shops.
The president of NETA, Thadeus Musoke Nagenda, during a meeting at NETA’s head offices located at Yiga Chambers Building on Matia Mulumba Road in Old Kampala, said Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) should not slow down on the financial support.
The government, through the Prime Minister, who is also the head of government business in Parliament, Robinah Nabbanja, directed KCCA to register all the affected traders along the Nakivubo road whose property was damaged.
She stated that at an opportune time, they will be assisted to restock.
Musoke, who on Thursday convened a media engagement to announce the National Quality Awards Nominees 2025, revealed that in the meantime, KCCA had reintroduced the Sunday market.
“After the floods, all the affected traders were asked to register and also give information of their names and related information, including shop numbers and their various trades, so that the government can know where to start supporting them,” he said.
The KCCA spokesperson, Daniel Nuwabiine, said KCCA has verified 451 traders who are meant to be paid.
He added that KCCA is going to continue verifying this list to confirm who was affected.
