Focused on the development of motorsport in the country, Shell has committed sh300m to the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU).

Johan Grobbelaar, the managing director of Vivo Energy Uganda announced the sponsorship during a media briefing at the company offices in Kampala.

“We are once again proud to be title sponsors of the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally. Our longstanding partnership reflects our commitment to the motorsport community,” Grobbelaar said.

According to FMU president Jimmy Akena, the sponsorship has given Pearl Rally a new lease of life, and is now confident that he can organise a successful event.

The sh300m will be in cash and in kind with Pearl Rally taking sh120m of which sh40m will be cash and sh80m in Kind.

Motocross will take sh25m, Ronald Sebuguzi sh50m, Jas Mangat and other prizes will make up the sh300m sponsorship.

Akena said that the sponsorship was a good relief to the federation and that each crew competing will get 100 litres of fuel to help them cut costs in this year’s edition of the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Rally.

The Pearl of Africa rally starts on Thursday with scrutineering and then the qualifying stage and Shakedown on Friday before attacking the competitive stages on Saturday and Sunday.

The event is co-sponsored by KCB and Uganda Railways.
