Energy minister Ruth Nankabirwa has urged resident district commissioners (RDCs) and district police commanders (DPCs) to act decisively against electricity theft and vandalism.

Speaking on Wednesday (July 9) during the commemoration of 100 days of service by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), held at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, the minister expressed concern over the growing problem of power infrastructure vandalism across several regions.

She identified key hotspots as including Wabigalo, Nakasongola, Migyera, Mityana, Mubende, Hoima, Mukono, the Elgon region, and Mbarara.

The vice has severely disrupted the electricity supply in the affected areas.

UEDCL assumed full responsibility for electricity distribution on March 31, following the end of Umeme's 20-year concession.

“Vandalism remains a significant challenge, and we must act immediately. In the Elgon region, especially, power theft is rampant, and tragically, electrocution-related deaths are often misreported as snake bites," said Nankabirwa.

She revealed that 17 suspects were recently charged with terrorism in connection with acts of vandalism, adding that their prosecution should serve as a warning to others engaged in similar offences.

“I call on all RDCs, DPCs, and district officials to arrest anyone involved in electricity vandalism or power theft. You are the government, stop waiting for someone else to act," directed the energy minister, urging them to be fearless in the cause.

“RDCs and DPCs are appointed by the President and should not shy away from enforcing the law.”

Nankabirwa also encouraged community members to play their part by reporting suspicious activity, including anyone tampering with electricity poles or engaging in power theft, to prevent accidents and save lives.

“If you park a government vehicle in some of these regions, you’ll see people scattering because they know what they are doing is illegal."

The minister’s call comes as the government intensifies efforts to safeguard critical power infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for all Ugandans.
