Experts say the outbreak of COVID-19 was a blessing in disguise for e-commerce, with many businesses opening online shops to reach clients whose movements had been restricted.
The growth of e-commerce in Uganda is also due to the increase in cell phone penetration, the increased use of mobile money and adoption of online advertising channels. This has, in turn, created a demand for fast, convenient and affordable shopping options.
According to Robert Wanok, the head personal and business banking at Dfcu, these changes have revolutionized operations for millions of businesses across the country.
Speaking during the unveiling of this year’s Jumia Black Friday campaign, of which Dfcu is a key partner, Wanok noted that such online transactions are growing because clients are growing to enjoy the convenience of ordering online.
“In 2020, at the helm of the COVID-19 outbreak, there was only one sure way of serving the customers - online transactions,” he said.
Vinod Goel, the Jumia Uganda Chief Executive Officer said: “Over 6,000 sellers and 800 restaurant partners use web mobile applications to conduct their business.
They are able to display products, manage their inventory and pricing, run promotions for their brands and manage financials - 100% digital. This growth is expanding across the country,” he said.
